וִירוּס ענק (באנגלית: Giant virus או Girus) הוא נגיף גדול מאוד, חלק מהנגיפים הענקיים גדולים יותר מחיידקים טיפוסיים.[1][2] כל נגיפי הענק הידועים שייכים למערכה נוקלאוציטוביריקוטה (אנ').[3]

תיאור

בעוד שהקריטריונים המדויקים המשמשים בספרות המדעית משתנים, וירוסי ענק מוגדרים בדרך כלל ככאלו עם ויריונים גדולים מ-200–300 ננומטר בממד הקטן ביותר שלהם (מה שהופך אותם לגלויים על ידי מיקרוסקופ אור)[4] וגודל גנום גדול מ-200–300 זוגות בסיסים.[5][6][7][8] כל נגיפי הענק הידועים שייכים ל־Nucleocytoviricota, נגיפי ה-DNA הגדולים הנוקלאוציטופלזמיים, כלומר ידוע שהם משתכפלים גם בגרעין התא המארח וגם בציטופלזמה, ויש להם גנומים גדולים של DNA דו-גדילי.[3][9] אף על פי שכל נגיפי הענק שייכים למערכה זו, הם אינם קבוצה מונופילטית,[10] שכן חלק מחברי ה-Nucleocytoviricota, כמו הסוג Prasinovirus, אינם נגיפי ענק.

הגנומים הגדולים של וירוסים ענקיים רבים מקודדים גנים יוצאי דופן שאינם נמצאים בווירוסים אחרים, כולל גנים המעורבים בגליקוליזה ובמחזור ה-TCA,[11] תסיסה[12] ושלד התא[13][14] וירוסים ענקיים מהאוקיינוס העמוק, ממקורות יבשתיים וממטופלים אנושיים מכילים גנים המקודדים לאנזימי ציטוכרום P450 (CYP; P450). מקורם של גנים אלה של P450 בווירוסים ענקיים נותר לא ידוע, אך ייתכן שהם נרכשו מפונדקאי קדום.[15]

וירוסים ענקיים מדביקים מגוון רחב של פונדקאים אאוקריוטיים, כגון אמבות, אצות, לפדופטרנים ובני אדם, והם נפוצים באופן נרחב בסביבה הטבעית.[16]
